This article focuses on geobotanical mapping with special emphasis on mire vegetation. A brief review of the history of mire mapping in Russia is given. The purpose of the research reported here is to promote the application of cartographic methods to phytosociological studies as well as to contribute to further development of methods for large-scale mapping of mire vegetation. Kudrovsky mire massif (Leningrad region, NW Russia) was chosen as the study area. Two vegetation maps were prepared on the basis of different vegetation classifi cation approaches, namely the dominant (ecologicphytocoenotic) and fl oristic (Braun-Blanquet) methods. The same vegetation relevé data were classifi ed using both approaches and the resulting classifi cations were used to construct legends for the maps. The traditions and problems of Russian vegetation cartography are briefl y discussed.

Peatlands and paludified forests have been regarded and classified as forests on peat soil in the former USSR. Treeless mires and sparsely forested mires with poor-quality tree stands have considered to be real mires. That is why in Russia, the term of forest type is traditionally used instead of mire type. The dominant tree species has the indicator role of the site type and this is also reflected in the name of the forest type. Besides the nationwide classification based on Sukachev's works, there are also some interesting regional (now national) classification systems especially in Latvia and Lithuania. Key words: forest drainage, Latvia, Lithuania, Russia, Siberia

Vladimir Sakovets, Natalia I. Germanova. Changes in the carbon balance of forested mires in Karelia due to drainage.
Avainsanat: peat; peatland forestry; phytomass; Russia

The carbon balance of undrained and drained parts of a herb-rich pine fen mire ecosystem were calculated. The drainage had been carried out twenty years earlier. Drainage resulted in an increase of 1.23 t C ha-1 a-1 within the ecosystem. The increase was due to increased stand production, which exceeded a loss of carbon from the peat (-0.32 t ha-1 a-1). Keywords: Peat, peatland forestry, phytomass, Russia
